A.B.G. Shultz Students Runner-Up Winners in 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. African American Academic History Challenge (History Bowl Challenge)

On April 10, 2010 two brothers from the A.B.G.S. Middle School, Elijah and Timothy John were runner-up winners in the 100 Black Men of Long Island African American Academic Challenge (History Bowl Challenge). The competition is open to all Long Island Schools and is played in a Jeopardy style format. The duo came within two questions of winning the championship round and a trip to the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. national finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The siblings performance round was so impressive that they have been invited back to compete in next year’s competition (which will be the first time the competition – which was hosted by Newsday and scholarships for the 2009 calendar year awards in the amount of $500.00 were provided by State Farm – has allowed this).

Their efforts will also be recognized in the local media throughout the New York State area. We anxiously look forward to their bringing home the “Gold” next season. Congratulations to Elijah and Timothy for a job well done, as well as, to their parents Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm John for their assistance in actively helping to prepare their children for this event.

Special thanks to Mr. Ali, six grade social studies and math teacher for serving as the academic advisor and pedagogue to the students for this affair.

Proposed School Budget Increase 1.94 Percent, Lowest Since 1997.

(HEMPSTEAD, NY) - Taxpayers will receive the lowest increase in 13 years under the Hempstead Union Free School District proposed budget for the 2010-2011 academic school year, with an increase of 1.94 percent.

The estimated $160,684,736 budget is one of the lowest since the 1997-1998 school budget. The proposed budget is a $3 million increase, which is $4 million less than that of the 2009-2010 budget.

Hempstead taxpayers also will receive the lowest tax levy increase since the 2007-2008 budget at 3.57 percent, or $2.2 million more under the proposed budget for the 2010-2011 academic school year.
“The proposed 2010-2011 school budget continues the delivery of quality education standards set for students of the Hempstead Union Free School District,” said Dr. Patricia Watkins, Superintendent of Hempstead Public Schools. “At a time when families are struggling to make ends meet, this budget is considerate of their financial challenges, yet it provides the necessary funding to progress education initiatives planned for the District.”

Under the proposed 2010-2011 school budget: all Kindergarten and first grade students will learn a foreign language under the Foreign Language Elementary Program (FLES); Hempstead Schools will implement a district-wide robotics program; District facilities will receive installations for new technology infrastructure and hardware, and the District will subsidize the School Lunch Fund to maintain low-cost student meals.

“This budget offers students the opportunity to expand their academic horizons through new school programs such as robotics and advance placements courses, while providing year-long workshops for those in need of more academic support,” said Brandon V. Ray, a School Board Trustee. “The proposed budget would help students of Hempstead Public Schools become some of the best and brightest on Long Island.”

The proposed 2010-2011 budget will bring a general education teacher to Franklin Elementary School, an additional bilingual teacher for Jackson Main Elementary School, advance placement course at the high school, and provides $50,000 for additional athletic coaches to the District.

“We’re including in our budget new initiatives that are going to help our children improve their educational experience,” said Gladys E. Rivera, a School Board Trustee.

The Superintendent and School Board have made protecting the integrity of the classroom a top priority for the 2010-2011 academic school year. The District has established the following five goals to meet those objectives:

Increase Student Achievement
Maintain a Safe School Environment
Engage Parents and Community
Operate with Fiscal Responsibility, Integrity and Effectiveness
Provide Strong Effective Leadership at the Governance, District and School Levels.

Residents will vote on the 2010-2011 school budget Tuesday, May 18, 2010, 7 a.m. to 9p.m. at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School, located at 70 Greenwich Street Hempstead, NY 11550.

“I am confident that residents will make the right choice in the best interest of our children’s education,” said Dr. Watkins. “We can not afford to have students receive less than what they deserve, and the proposed 2010-2011 budget insures the long-term fiscal health of the district and our Children’s future.”
